Haircuts & Upstyles in
Birmingham, AL

Whether you want a shape you can wash and go with, or an updo that holds through a full wedding reception, the right cut starts with a stylist who actually listens. Hair Stage has been cutting and styling hair in Birmingham for more than 40 years, and our team takes the time to look at your hair's density, texture, growth pattern, and how much time you realistically want to spend on it each morning. Then we cut to that — not to a trend that won't work on you.

Precision Haircuts for Every Hair Type

Every haircut at Hair Stage begins with a consultation. We'll talk through what's working, what isn't, and what you want the grow-out to look like in eight weeks — because a cut that only looks good for two weeks isn't a good cut.

Women's Haircut & Style

A full cut and blow-dry style, customized to your face shape and lifestyle. We'll build in layers, movement, or weight removal depending on what your hair actually needs, and finish with a style you can recreate at home.

Butterfly Cuts, Long Layers & Face-Framing

Want volume and movement without sacrificing length? The butterfly cut has become one of our most-requested services — short internal layers create lift and face-framing while the exterior length stays intact. It's a favorite for anyone growing hair out who still wants shape.

Barber Cuts for Men

Clean, classic, and contemporary men's cuts including tapers, fades, and scissor cuts. Everyone is welcome at Hair Stage — we cut for men, women, and kids under the same roof.

Bang Trims & Children's Haircuts

Quick bang trims between appointments, plus patient, low-stress haircuts for children.

Cuts for Thick, Curly & Asian Hair Textures

Thick, coarse, and straight Asian hair textures behave differently under the shears, and they're a specialty of ours. Clients regularly drive in from across the Birmingham metro specifically because our stylists know how to remove bulk without creating frizz, puffiness, or a triangle shape.

Haircut At Salon

What to Expect at Your Appointment

You'll start with a consultation — bring photos if you have them, and tell us about how much time you'll spend styling at home. From there, it's a shampoo, the cut, and a finishing style, with a conversation along the way about products and how to recreate the look yourself. Plan on 45–60 minutes for a cut and style, and 60–90 minutes for a formal upstyle.

I had the best hair cut today from Jonni! Even though it had been over a year since my last cut, she was patient, listened to what I was looking for, and delivered! Wonderful service!, very kind and friendly salon! I will definitely be returning, hopefully much sooner than a year!!!

I have very thick Asian hair that has a mind of its own. Probably double the volume of most people. Aihua really knows how to cut my hair type with the right layers so that I don't look like a puff ball. She does beautiful color jobs on her clients and Jonni's work always looks very nice too. The salon is a beautiful and comfortable space and she keeps snacks and refreshments available which is always nice.

Aihua is the best hairstylist. She’s super nice and patient and always trying to understand and find the best look for customers. I had a long hair for 1.5 years and this time I got a short haircut with highlights, which I absolutely LOVE!! Thank you so much!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get a haircut?

Most clients come in every 6–8 weeks. If you have a shorter, more structured cut, every 4–6 weeks keeps the shape. If you're growing hair out, every 10–12 weeks for a dusting of the ends is usually enough.

Do you cut men's and children's hair?

Yes. Hair Stage serves all ages — barber cuts start at $40 and children's cuts at $20.

Should I book a trial before my wedding?

We recommend it. A trial lets us test how your hair holds, how the style photographs, and how it works with your veil and dress neckline — ideally 4–8 weeks before the wedding.

How far in advance should I book prom hair?

As early as you can. Spring prom weekends and wedding Saturdays book out well ahead of time, especially for groups.

Can I get a haircut and color in the same appointment?

Yes, and it's usually the better plan — we can cut into the color for the cleanest result. Just let us know when booking so we allow enough time.
